Racer Sideways Group 5 – Proxy Race #6

Saturday, June 12th

The final round of the Racer Sideways Group 5 race series was one that saw the most drivable car win – the Gold Leaf liveried Ford Capri built by Randy.  Everyone agreed that this was the car to drive and therefore it’s no surprise that it took the top spot on the podium for the third time.  In taking the top spot in the race it also took second place overall in the final standings.  A great performance from a car that seemed to get better every round.

The second-place car in the final round was the matte black Lancia Stratos.  Even though this car finished in second place in the final three rounds and only finished first twice it still took first place in the overall standings due to the two first places and the six fast lap bonus points.  There is no doubt this car was quick but it’s also no doubt that it took someone with great driving skill to get the most out of the car.

The third placed car in this round was also the car that finished third overall in the series.  This was the well prepared BMW 320 in Jagermeister livery from Russell’s garage.  This car was not always this quick but somewhere in the middle of the series this car found form and started to become one of the ones battling for the overall win.  It was a great car to drive and had good speed but was just not as stable or quick as the two cars that finished ahead of it.

The fourth placed car was the BMW M1 from the garage of Lucas Motor Works.  This car has had some issues during the series but found form towards the end.  This form helped it to fourth place in this round and a fourth overall result.

The fifth placed car in the series and in the overall results was the other BMW M1 from John’s Beeville workshop.  John spent plenty of time on the car trying to get the car to be quick and/or stable but unfortunately it was one of those cars that could not find either.  We have all come across one of those cars that no matter what you did it was still a challenge to drive – this was one of those cars.

This is the third time we have run a Racer Sideways Group 5 series and the first time we have run it as a proxy.  The series was once again successful and highlights the quality and tuneability of these cars.  It was a great series and now the cars are put away for a few more years until we run the series again and yes, we will run the series again.
